After only a few years, new animal species have already returned to the estate, including squirrel monkeys, wildcats, deer, and several pairs of scarlet macaws, which are now permanent residents. In 2020, around 25% of the property was covered by forests, with the rest being secondary forest and pastureland. By the end of 2022, 33% is now forested. We are pleased to invite our visitors to plant trees as a personal contribution to the protection of our environment.
By planting trees along streams (usually dry during the dry season), we quickly observe how it changes the hydrology of the hills. Water flows for a longer period during the year, attracting mammals, birds, butterflies, and more. We also facilitate the migration of mammals between the mountains and the Pacific coast by preserving the primary forest along the Rio Chires, which provides cooler air and water year-round.
We are thrilled when we spot a new family of squirrel monkeys (which almost disappeared from Costa Rica a few decades ago), eagles, or pairs of scarlet macaws (red macaws).
We aim to develop new uses of the land by promoting responsible cacao and vanilla farming, creating new jobs for the community. Costa Rican cacao beans have become some of the best in the world.
